Leaves Are Fall-ing: Pigment and Foil Stamped Nail Art

I LOVE Fall! It never fails that the drop in temperatures and a bit of crisp air will signal my brain to come up with some creative fall nail art. And I could not be more pleased with this combination of Magic Shifting Powder pigment, Magic Foil and metallic stamping on rich hues of polish.

It’s been a few months since I’ve blogged and boy am I rusty! I struggled so much trying to get this post underway that I even considered just sharing this design on social media and foregoing the blog post. But I felt as though I would regret that at some point, losing all the precious details. So here I am. Have you missed me???

The inspiration for this fall nail art design came from What’s Up Nails Magic Shifting Powder in Sunset, which I used previously in a look I called Shifty.  It transitions between red, orange and gold, just like the leaves are doing outside my window. The initial idea was to stamp my entire nail with leaves and cover them in the powder. And that looked nice. But, some 20+ nail pops later, I fully fleshed out the idea with individual leaves and the addition of some Magic Foil in Gold and swirly patterns done in tonal metallics.

DESIGN DETAILS

Once again, I pulled out my Floss Gloss drawer and found the exact shades I had in mind for this look. I polished my thumb, index and pinky fingers with Floss Gloss Smoke On The Nail and accented my middle and ring fingers with Dinge and Keys To The Mansion, respectively.

In my testing, I found that matte topcoat gave me more control over where the Magic Powder would “stick”. I also felt that the elements really popped on the matte finish, so I topped my polish with Girly Bits Polish Matte’rs.

First, I stamped a swirly design from UberChic Love & Marriage 01 onto all nails except my ring. You likely know that I am a HUGE fan of tonal stamping and I could not pass on the opportunity to add it as a layer here. I used Hit The Bottle Oh Look…It’s Wine Thirty over the mulberry and China Glaze Magical, a rose gold shade, over the nude.

Next it was time to add some leaves. I worked on one nail at a time, switching between the pigment and foil, but I certainly could have done all pigment followed by all foil. I loved the selection of leaves on What’s Up Nails A011 Leaves Are Fall-ing so much so that it became my name sake.

I stamped one leaf using Moyra Foil Polish for Stamping in White, dabbed on some What’s Up Nails Magic Shifting Powder in Sunset and rubbed it in with an eyeshadow applicator. A large, fluffy brush quickly removed the excess powder. I used the same polish for the second leaf and pressed on some Moyra Magic Foil in Gold.

I am so glad I added these 2 Moyra products to my arsenal. Yes, they are a tad pricey. But I feel they make pigment and foil stamping easier to do and I give me great results every time.

The final step was to add a few small Clear Swarovski Crystals on each nail because they just needed a touch of bling. I used a tiny dab of Daily Charme Stick On Gelly to attach them.

Were you curious how this nail art would look shiny? Yeah, me too. I topped the nails with UNT Ready for Takeoff first because anything other than a water-based base/topcoat will wipe the pigment right off the nail. I spaced out during testing and applied regular topcoat directly and POOF, gone!  You’ll also want to be sure to let the UNT dry completely, for several minutes, before applying topcoat to avoid the goopy mess I encountered. I finished with a coat of Glisten & Glow Topcoat, previously HK Girl Fast Drying Topcoat.

I must say that my Moyra Pixl Clear Stamper No. 12 made easy work of this placement stamping design. Let your mind wander for a minute to the days before clear stampers and what a nightmare a look like this would have been to create!! On a side note, this Moyra stamper has become my favorite clear stamper, beating out stampers from MoYou London AND Clear Jelly Stamper. It picks up even the shallowest of images with ease…yes, I am looking at you Moyra and Lina! If you can find it, I highly recommend that you pick one up!

I love scrolling back up through the photos and watching the Magic Pigment do it’s thing, subtly shifting colors as I changed my hand poses. I’m excited to hear your thoughts on this one! Do you like fall nail art as much as I do? Matte or shiny??

Thanks so much for reading! Until next time,
