We interrupt our regularly scheduled Holiday Nail Art to bring you...wait for it...FLAKIES!! With America at large receiving their ILNP Flakie pre-orders last week, myself included, I decided I would show you a gorgeous Limited Edition Flakie from KBShimmer instead.
I sat down at my work area with the intent of swatching this polish along with the other flakies I had received from ILNP. I started with this one and never looked back! It was so amazingly pretty that swatching turned into full blown nail art!
Rainbow Shield is KBShimmer's multicolor version of sheer flakes swimming in a clear base that come alive when applied over darker colors. There are 5 different color flakies in here and 4 of them shift. Yes folks, that means there are potentially 9 magical, stunning colors in this one formula! Christy was diligent enough to include a warning about the potential distraction of wearing this polish while driving and she's not kidding!
In case you are curious, the flakies included are: red/green shifting, yellow/green shifting, teal/green shifting, blue/green shifting and indigo. I applied it over 2 coats of KBShimmer Eclipse, a black cream, for this photo. I started with one coat at the left side of my rainbow and stepped up to 2 coats from the bend and beyond.
For my nails I started with a base of Orly Bonder then applied 2 coats of Eclipse to all fingers except my ring finger. There I applied a base of Nail Pattern Boldness Glitter A-Peel and 2 coats of Too Cold To Hold (see my review "KBShimmer Winter 2014 Collection Swatches & Review: Part 1").
I applied HK Girl Topcoat to each nail to speed drying time before the next step. I even, gasp, applied 2 coats of topcoat over Too Cold To Hold at some point along the way so you could see how this insanely textured polish looked shiny.
I taped off my thumb, index and pinky fingers with Single Chevrons from NailVinyls. Then I applied the Rainbow Shield and perhaps went a little overboard! Don't misunderstand me, it looked absolutely amazing in my opinion. But stopping at 1 heavier coat instead of 2 would have given it a completely different look. Next time...
While that was drying I tried and failed at foil stamping again. Bound and determined to use that box of foils that have been taking up space in my closet for months, I pulled out the glue and covered my middle finger in foil in the colors of the rainbow. I topped it with 2 coats of piCture pOlish Revolution and it was still in great shape when I took these photos the next morning.
The plan was to stamp over the foil so it would be an interesting enhancement to the flakies, but still allow them to be the star of this show. But I had never stamped over foil before and I was so scared of messing it up that I completely embellished my nails and took photos before even trying to stamp so I would still have something to show you if I screwed it up. Go ahead, you can laugh!
I applied 3, 4 and 5mm Crystal AB Swarovski Crystals to my pinky, index finger and thumb respectively. Next I added Daily Charme's Silver Long Pyramid Stud to my ring finger. Finally I used my Stripe Rite silver glitter to draw a thin line between Rainbow Shield and Eclipse.
I knew I wanted to use a design from the MoYou London Kaleidoscope series and finally got up the courage to try stamping with Mundo de Unas Black. I immediately regretted my design choice and had no alternative but to try to get it off. I learned that dabbing on non-acetone polish remover with a brush and gently rubbing with your finger will take off the stamping polish! Can you believe it?? It dulled the finish on my foil a little, but I went over it with another coat of Revolution and I was back in shiny business!
After 2 poor design choices, I finally settled on one from MoYou London Kaleidoscope 04. Typically I do more testing in advance when I am trying a new technique, but I didn't feel like putting the time into setting up foil swatches on a test plate. In the end it cost me more time fixing my poor design choices and I was just lucky I was able to salvage the foil.

I LOVED the way this design turned out! This was my first time using a flakie and I understand now what all the buzz was about! They easily turn the ordinary into the extraordinary with the versatility of changing your look entirely by applying less or more. Then you can change it up again by using matte topcoat instead of shiny. I'll be trying that next!
These Limited Edition Flakies can only be found on KBShimmer's Etsy Store and there are 6 colors to choose from.
Have you jumped on the flakie bandwagon yet? I'd love to hear about your purchase(s) and your thoughts on mine.
Thanks for reading! I'll see you at the next post.
